THE CUMBERNAULD YMCA/ YWCA have officially launched a petition online, aimed at gathering supporters who oppose the intent of North Lanarkshire Council to oust the YMCA/ YWCA and use the remaining space, at the Y’s Tarbolton Road farmhouse, for additional social housing.

Already close to 500 people have signed up to the petition, including the Cumbernauld House Trust and Environmental Society’s Adam Smith and Cumbernauld South SNP Councillor, Paddy Hogg.

The petition reads: “Our Association has received notice from North Lanarkshire Council of their intention to take back the properties at 21a-h Tarbolton Road. These have been managed by the YMCA-YWCA in Cumbernauld since being requested to run an accommodation project for the young people of Cumbernauld in 1987 by the then Cumbernauld & Kilsyth District Council.

“Having accommodated on average between 80-100 young people per year and with now over 4000 referrals since 1987 it would indeed be a great loss to Cumbernauld if this service is lost for the young homeless in the area now and in the future.”

The petition’s organiser, Lesley Donnelly Johnstone then asks people sign up to the petition and spread the word if people “…feel the demise of this service at Tarbolton would be a great loss to Cumbernauld.”
