CUMBERNAULD’S 2012 10k event is drawing closer, with less than a month to go until amateurs and professionals pound the pavements around Broadwood Loch.

Taking place at Broadwood Stadium, this year's Cumbernauld 10k event will take place on Sunday 9th September and there's a race for all ages.

Primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils will race over 1k, starting from 10am, while S1 to S4 age pupils can compete in the 3k run which begins at 11.10am. And anyone over 16 can line up for the main 10k race at 11.00am.

For the first time, supporters of our charity partners, the Scottish Spina Bifida Association and Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments, will have an opportunity to take part in a Victory Mile event. This allows young people affected by these conditions, their friends and family to support the event with a mile walk around the stadium.

This the sixth year of the 10k event which is organised by the council in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire, Campsies Centre Cumbernauld Ltd and North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd, with support from Strathmore Spring Water and the Cumbernauld News and Kilsyth Chronicle.

North Lanarkshire Council Leader Councillor Jim McCabe said: "Cumbernauld 10k is one of the biggest events in the North Lanarkshire calendar, with athletes from across central Scotland taking part."

"It's a popular event for elite athletes as well as novice runners, and the children's runs are always strongly contested so it's a fun event for everyone involved.

"This year we are hoping to raise more money for our two charity partners so we're asking participants in the 10k if they would like to make a donation to these two very worthwhile causes. If anyone would like to be raise sponsorship to take part, I know the charities would welcome your support which will help support children, young people and their parents across Scotland affected by spina bifida, hydrocephalus and cerebral palsy."

The deadline for entries is 30th August and there are discounts for Scottish Athletics and jogscotland members, and for residents of North Lanarkshire who are Access NL or Passport to Leisure members.

Full details on how to sign up are available on the North Lanarkshire Council website.
