SAVE ABRONHILL HIGH SCHOOL FILM

Cumbernauld Media has today (18th November 2012) published, through its Cumbernauld Television sister project, an exclusive video into the campaign to save Abronhill High School. Talking to local politicians, campaigners and even ex-Taggart star Colin McCredie, the twenty minute video explores the proposals, their impact and why people stand against the proposals from North Lanarkshire Council. The full video is available at: http://youtu.be/WEGr-UCagvA and more content is available through the Cumbernauld Television website at Cumbernauld.TV.

THE WAY AHEAD > COUNCIL BUDGET

LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR FUTURE

North Lanarkshire Council commenced its consultation into £73.3 million worth of public expenditure cuts on 1st October.

The Way Ahead document was produced on 28th September and was distributed to all North Lanarkshire households with the hope that each household would have their say.

THE WAY AHEAD > AREAS

LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR FUTURE

Key proposals propose savings in all council areas, such as:

  • Housing and Social Work Services
  • Learning and Leisure Services
  • Environmental Services
  • Finance and Customer Services
  • Chief Executive's Office

THE ABRONHILL DEBATE

One proposal on the table is the rationalisation of Cumbernauld and Abronhill High Schools. The schools, which are both underpopulated, although their individual student populations remain over 50% but under 60%.

Under plans laid out in the Draft Savings Proposals, published last month, the two schools could be amalgamated before the new school year, in August 2013. The amalgamation will put the two populations together, creating a student population of around 1,200.

The proposal has been greeted with delight, horror, resentment and excitement. Under the proposals, Cumbernauld High School would be rebuilt, although some SNP Councillors have indicated that Cumbernauld High School is second on the 'to-do list' for North Lanarkshire Council regardless of the decision taken.

Already two consultative meetings have been held at Abronhill High School and Cumbernauld High School, with the public being able to respond to the official rationalisation proposals until 20th November.

The draft savings options package also has a consultation, and this will run until November 9th.
